Notes on Major William A. Morgan
- Born in Toledo, Ohio, Major Morgan gave up his U.S. citizenship
when he joined the Cuban Army. A presidential decree granted him Cuban
citizenship.
- According to the article on the NYTimes (3/12/1961), Major
Morgan once frustrated attempts to overthrow Castro by posing as a double agent
in August 1959. The conspiracy involved former members of Batista's government
with "alleged support of the Dominican Republic."
- In November 1960, Major Morgan and 12 others were accused of
sending weapons and ammunition to anti-Castro rebels operating in the Escambray
Mountains.
- On March 11, 1961, Major Morgan and Major Jesus Carreras Zayas were
tried for treason in the afternoon and executed shortly after 10 pm.
