She was hopeful again...

From my hotel room I called as many of the refugees' relatives in the US as I could, adding a hefty sum to my bill. The family members in the US were glad to hear that their brother or uncle had managed to get out of Cuba, and were eager to find out how to speed up legal formalities.

After the calls I finally dozed off, thinking about how most of the new immigrants would be sleeping on a hard-wood floor, and countless others in a cold, wet and crowded boat in the middle of the ocean.

Many would be sleeping on the floor...
